September 27th is Gold Star Mothers Day

by Sylvia Babineau

Gold Star Mother’s Day  will be observed this Sunday, September 27, in recognition of the mothers who have lost sons and daughters in the service of their country.   We are all asked to display the nation's flag to express our love, sorrow, and reverence towards Gold Star Mothers and their families.

Gold Star Mother's Day began with 25 mothers living in the Washington DC area and soon expanded to include affiliated groups throughout the nation. On June 23, 1936, a joint congressional resolution designated the last Sunday in September as Gold Star Mother's Day, a holiday that has been observed each year by a presidential proclamation.

The last Sunday in September is also Parents of Fallen Military Sons and Daughters Day in New Jersey. This day is a tribute to all parents whose children died as a result of their service with the United States Armed Forces. It commemorates the contributions, commitments and sacrifices made by those parents individually and through the American Gold Star Mothers, Inc, which was was incorporated in 1929 by federal charter from the US Congress.

Full Moon over Sarasota

by Sylvia Babineau

Beautiful temperatures in the 70’s and a weekend with a full moon provided Sarasotans with some great events to enjoy. The Manatee Sarasota Sierra Club sponsored a 2 mile sunset and moonrise walk in South Lido Park. Hikers could enjoy the native plant restoration and beach views while watching the full moon rise. A potluck followed the trek.

Another full moon hike took place just west of town and north of Myakka State park at the Crowley site - 191 acres of old Florida habitats with native plants, animals, insects, birds and hiking trails which take visitors through the piney flatwoods, oak hammocks, and along a half-mile boardwalk through swamp and marsh.  The spring-fed Crowley creek meanders along the edge of the marsh. Views of the river from the tower at the end of the boardwalk under a full moon are stunning.

The 43rd Annual Amateur Sand Sculpting Contest at Siesta Key Beach led to sand castles being built and enjoyed by beach goers. Twenty-four teams entered the contest, said Andrea King, recreation program coordinator for Sarasota County Parks and Recreation. Each was given a 10-foot-by-10-foot square of sand and five-and-a-half hours to form their masterpiece. Spectators voted for their favorite sculpture, and a panel of judges was on site as well.  A professional contest takes place I November - the annual Siesta Key Crystal Classic Master Sand Sculpting Competition.

And to wind down, as has been going on for over five years, Yoga on the beach is a hallmark of Siesta’s charm. By donation the classes are held on Siesta’s beautiful white sand 4 days a week.
